Does the Community Dinners meal cost money?
No, the meal is free for anyone who joins. If you would like to donate some money for the meal you may give it to the meeting leader.
Do shelters work on a per night basis?
No. Almost every shelter works on a per month basis (with the exception of Stellenbosch Night Shelter who works on a per night basis). Every shelter resident gets their bed for a full month provided that they do not fault on the code of conduct.
Are night shelters free?
No. The average fee for a first-phase shelter is R360 per month for an unemployed person. There is a 2-week grace period where a person doesn't have to pay up front but has some time to source the money or for a social worker to determine whether they are eligible for a social grant or to be part of the shelter's work program.
Should I give money to a homeless person?
This is a tricky question to answer. New Hope advise that you use discernment whether you should give money or not. Not all homeless people abuse money but there are certainly some who do. Supporting organisations who provide services for the homeless prove to be the best way to give of your finances. However, there are circumstances where giving money can help someone in need.
